Talk by Andy Smith from the RNLI in Lowestoft
East Point Rotary were recently pleased to welcome Andy Smith from the RNLI in Lowestoft as our speaker. Andy gave us an informative talk on the history of the RNLI which has had a station in Lowestoft since 1801. We were treated to footage of the more recent lifeboats – Spirit of Lowestoft and Patsy Knight – in action. The latest Shannon class vessel is waterjet propelled which makes the vessel easier to manoeuvre, capable of speeds up to 25 knots and is packed with hi tech navigational equipment.
Andy was also able to show us some of the equipment and clothing that the crew use when they are called out in all weathers.
One member lost no time in trying out the clothing for himself.
