Rotary Young Citizen Award 2025 Won by Local Man

Apr 1, 2025

The Rotary Young Citizen Awards were created by Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland (Rotary GB&I) to recognise and celebrate the achievements and commitment of inspiring young people in these islands. There are many young positive role-models who are going out of their way to make a difference and the Rotary Young Citizen Awards are a way to showcase the good that young people are doing.

The Rotary Young Citizen Awards are for young people, or groups of young people, under the age of 25 who have demonstrated positive citizenship, personal achievements, assumed important responsibilities, undertaken community activities, or otherwise stood out as exceptional.

Rotary Lowestoft East Point are delighted to announce that Daniel Jillings (19) of Lowestoft was a recipient of a Rotary Young Citizen Award 2025 at the recent Rotary Youth Awards ceremony in Romford.

Daniel is currently undertaking a BA History degree course at the University of Exeter. Daniel is profoundly deaf and has no access to speech, his first language is British Sign Language (BSL).

Since 2018, Daniel has been actively campaigning for all students, both deaf and hearing, to have equal opportunity to study British Sign Language, as a GCSE in secondary education. Daniel’s campaigning has resulted in extensive media coverage and production of a BBC documentary recognising his instrumental efforts in achieving success in getting the British Sign Language GCSE qualification underway. Daniel is getting closer to realising his objective but still requires support in lobbying MPs and the Ministry of Education.
